How does Exercise give relief when all else is falling apart.

Once when I found that everything around me seemed to be failing, after investing a lot of time, energy and money into reaching a dream that I had had for a very long time, the anxiety and sleeplessness were really getting to me.

I found that I could not even switch off or meditate easily and found that the only way to get to sleep was to watch dramas and movies before nodding off.   I didn’t realise that the most powerful dramas and movies were the ones right inside of my mind, largely my own responsibility, and not easily to let go of.

I needed to find a way to stop the overwhelm.  I needed to make small changes in my lifestyle that would relieve some of the pressure, that gave to me rather than took away.

Exercise was the biggest factor that made a difference .  This is one of the key areas I have found builds resilience and the more I talk with people who have struggled with elements of uncertainty in their lives, the more I hear about people relieving pain and pressure of life events through exercise.  For example in my hypnotherapy practice I hear people say after starting their exercise program:

-       “I feel kinder to myself”

-       “I feel proud of myself”

-       “I feel like a kinder person to other people”

-       “I have drive”

-       “I feel like I can detach easily from my unpleasant feelings”

But how does one not be overwhelmed by the cost of gyms, routine and choices when looking for an exercise routine?

-       I always advise people when trying to start exercise routine is :

 -       to start really small – what small changes can you make right now to start exercise that incorporate into your existing day – like cycling to work or walking the young ones to school?

-       to find ways to make exercise work well into your usual routine, and can easily be managed and last into the future (being sustainable with a routine that can be a long term routine)

-       Scrolling through reels on social media of elite sportspeople can be overwhelming and discouraging.  Avoid comparing their physical exercise with your own.

-       The biggest reason you may feel that you don’t exercise is lack of time.  But there are ways to make time, and if you pay for a gym membership, or sporting club membership fee, you may feel more motivation to turn up.  Most people find just having the friendship circle that develops with time with joining a group exercise class enough motivation to keep going.

-       Start an activity that you really like and commit to building up your fitness bit by bit even if at the beginning it is slowly.

-       A lot of people say that exercising in the morning helps us to rewire our brain for the day ahead.

And most of all, start looking at reasons you can start exercising rather than reasons that you cant.
